All-Time
Champion Player
Returns to San
Antonio for
2006 AT&T
Championship
SAN ANTONIO–October
2, 2006:
Gary
Player, golf’s
globe-trotting
ambassador and
legend, has
committed to
play in the 2006
AT&T
Championship
presented by
Alcatel, October
16-22 at
Oak Hills
Country Club
in San Antonio,
joining an
already stellar
field for the
late season
Champions Tour
event.
Player, 71, was
inducted into
the World Golf
Hall of Fame in
1974 and is only
one of five
golfers to win
the career grand
slam for major
championships.
Known around the
world as the
‘The Black
Knight” he is
the only player
in the 20th
Century to win
the British Open
in three
different
decades.
This will be his
ninth visit to
San Antonio for
the AT&T
Championship; a
tournament he
finished tied
for second in
1993 and ’96,
but hasn’t
played in since
2002.
The
ever-optimistic
Player said he
was thrilled to
be returning to
the Alamo City
in October.
“I have more
passion, energy
and enjoyment
for the game
than ever,” he
said. “I love
golf and playing
as much as I
ever have.”
Player’s return
to San Antonio
in October
allows him to
join fellow and
possible future
World Golf Hall
of Fame members
like Lee
Trevino,
defending
champion Jay
Haas and star
rookie Fred
Funk.
“The addition of
a great champion
like Gary Player
only strengthens
an already
impressive field
for the
Championship,”
said Tournament
Director Colby
Callaway. “I’m
thrilled that
Mr. Player has
decided to join
the return of
great champions
to Oak Hills
next month.”
In 1996 en route
to his second
runner-up
performance
here, Player
opened with a
career low round
of 67 in San
Antonio to tie
for the early
lead and
finished with a
68 sandwiched
between a 74.
This year’s
return will give
him a chance to
add the AT&T
Championship to
the nearly 140
victories he has
won world wide
including 19 on
the Champions
Tour and 24 on
the PGA Tour.
He has shot his
age twice on the
Champions Tour,
most recently at
the 2005 Bank of
America
Championship
outside of
Boston. He’s
played in 49
Masters Golf
Tournaments and
opened last
April’s event
with the first
birdie of the
tournament on
the par 4 first
hole at Augusta
National Golf
Club.
“I’m still as
active and as
eager on the
golf course as
ever and that
has kept me
going in this
game all these
years,” he said.
A
golf course
designer, owner
of golf
academies, a
large children’s
foundation along
with a racing
stable of
horses, Player
recently became
involved in a
golf development
in Marshall
Ranch, Texas.
“The Black
Knight is coming
to San
Antonio.”
That’s going to
be a lot of fun
to say.”
Callaway added.
