Lakeway, TX, May 4, 2008-
The final round of the 2008 FEDEX-Kinko's
Classic of Austin saw
Nick Price post a 75 which led
to him coming up one shot short to
Denis Watson who closed with a
69 winning $240,000. Price tied for 2nd along with
Scott Hoch and
Tim Simpson who all took home
$117,333 each.
Watson, whose birdie on 18 sealed the
deal for the win, stated "never give up" referring to his come
from behind win.
Watson commenting on the atmosphere on the Champions Tour, when
asked if liked the relaxed feel, stated "yea it's pretty relaxed
on Thursday". He went on to say how completive it is on the CT
and the strive to win for everyone is deep. |

Kirk Hanefield, who played in
the tourney via the qualifying event held Monday at Barton
Creek, closed with a -7, 65, which
was the low round of the day. Hanefield, who is from New
Hampshire, went to University of Houston, has been a club
pro and prominent figure in the New England area for many
years.
> The signature par 3 16th hole claimed many balls on Sunday
including those of Jeff Sluman, Craig Stadler, John Cook,
Scott Simpson, and also one time tourney leader Nick Price.
Price doubled 16 which ultimately cost him the title.

Ben Crenshaw finished at -4 with a
final round 71,
Tom Kite ended with a 74 putting him at
2 over, and
Tom Jenkins wrapped it up with a 72
leaving him all even for the event.

Ron Franklin announced the players on
number 1 on Sunday. Franklin spent 17 years in Houston broadcasting for
both KPRC-TV & KHOU TV and joined the ESPN Team in 1987. On a sad note
Ron informed us that fellow broadcaster
Ron Stone, who anchored the news for
NBC affiliate KPRC-TV in Houston for 20 years is struggling with cancer
and the prognosis does not look good said Franklin. During his tenure at
KPRC Stone was referred to as "the most popular and revered news anchor
the city has ever known" by the Houston Chronicle.
> Winner Watson had 2 eagles on Friday and 1 on Saturday combined with
two bogeys for the week.
> Tim Simpson who finished tied for 2nd has survived brain surgery. See

> FedEx Kinko's has decided to not renew
their contract as the title sponsor of the Classic. Officials of the
tournament indicated they hope to name a new title sponsor in 2-4 weeks.
