AUSTIN, TX, May 1, 2005
- Dana Quigley calls him "Thorpey". Thorpe calls Quigley one of his best friends, maybe his best. At the Hills CC on Sunday afternoon everyone was just referring to Jim Thorpe as the 2005 FEDEX-Kinko's Champion. Apart from stumbling just a tad at the turn, it was "Thorpey" all the way. His closed the deal with a 69-69-68 10-under, that he called on Saturday as the winning number (10-under) that would be the number to seal the deal. Thorpe has now won 10 times on the Champions Tour, but this was his first ever win in Texas.

Thorpe came close to having the wheels to some off around the 11th hole but his longtime caddie, Tony, suggested he get his "butt in gear", and evidently it worked.

Starting the day tied with Wayne Levi for first, Thorpe seemed to do all the right things while his playing partners, which included Fleisher, shot their way into trouble. On more than one occasion Fleisher pushed his tee shots right which resulted in sever pitch outs due to being stymied by the many Oak trees that line the fairways at the Hills.

Dana Quigley wrapped up sole possession of 2nd place at 6-under shooting triple 70's for the tourney. Quigley said he played a good round, had no regrets, and looked forward to recounting the days' events on the plane ride back to Florida tonight that he would share with Thorpe.

Austin resident Tom Jenkins final round of 4-under 68 equaled the low round of the day which he shared with winner Thorpe.

divots:

>Thorpe makes it no secret of his love of casino's and betting the ponies. He also does a lot of other things, like donate large sums of money to his church. As a matter of fact, he donated his entire winning paycheck today of $247,500 to Crossings Community Church near Orlando Florida.
Thorpey's a good guy, he likes his fun, plays golf everyday...life is good.

>Lee Trevino saw something in Thorpe's putting stroke while watching the tourney on the Golf Channel. So what does he do? He call's Thorpey and tells him about it. Thorpey wins. Maybe we can get LT to call us too.

>Guerin Rife Putters made out like bandit on Sunday. Both Thorpe and Quigley (1st & 2nd) had the GRP 2 bar putter in their bag.

>Chuck Westergard, the Head Pro at San Antonio CC and who got into the tournament via the Monday qualifier, finished Tied 61st.

>Thorpe commented in his post-win interview that he loved the support that the Austin crowds provided him, especially on the closing holes.

>FEDEX-Kinko's has committed to sponsor the tournament for 3 more years thru 2008.
