QUIGLEY GETS IT DONE ON
SATURDAY-PLANS PINK
ATTACK ON SUNDAY |
October
22, 2005 - San Antonio:
Dana Quigley's on a mission. He wants to win the 2005
Schwab Cub. He wants to do well next week at the Schwab Cub
Championship in Sonoma so he
can hold onto the Schwab Cup points lead he has now held for
19 straight weeks.
All this
wanting probably contributed to his 2nd-round 7-under 64
today at
the SBC Championship. With the 67 he shot yesterday Quigley
has found himself atop the
leaderboard at 11-under going
into Sunday's final round. He is, as they say, "aware of his
environment."
Quigs is not
taking anything for granted. In the last three days he's had
tips from golf psychologist Bob Rotello, a wedge lesson from
Lee Trevino, a swing refresh from Jim McClean, and Brad
Faxon phoned in a putting tip on Friday.
Commenting
on his strategy: He is hitting driver off of
many tee's that others are hitting irons & woods. He calls
his driver the "best club" in his bag currently. There's no
"lay-up" in this man's plan. He's got brother Paul
(father of PGA's
Brett Quigley) on the bag this week. He's covering all
the bases.
Quigley
intermission-
John Harris,
who started today at the top of the leaderboard, ended the
day at 1-over par with a 72. Harris had a mediocre day and had
it go south on him on number 17 when he hit his second shot
out-of-bounds which resulted in a triple bogey. Harris is
still in contention, tied for 4th at 8-under.
Mark James
and Jay Haas both shot 66's which puts them at 2nd and 3rd
place respectively. Scott Simpson had the low round of the
day with a 63 placing him four strokes behind the lead at
7-under.
intermission
over. back to Quigley-
Part 2- Quigley's
plan.
Quigs said
Saturday if he wins the Schwab Cup (a $1-million annuity)
he's donating it all to charity, just like
Allen Doyle did when he won in 2001. He knows exactly
where he and everyone else stands. He knows that Hale Irwin is hot on his trail. He says being hailed
as the top player on the Champions Tour is something he has
trouble grasping, but he's going for it.
Quigley is into pink. His final-round Sunday attire
will be pink focused. Quigs wife Angie has even got into the fray by
buying all the Golf Channel TV golf commentators pink ties
at the new Nordstroms here in San Antonio. Dave Marr of the
Golf Channel wore his pink tie during the after-round
interview he did with Quigley today.
The usual
cigar-chomping Quigs had no stogie today. He said he doesn't
usually grab one until he makes a bogey, and since that
didn't until 14, as they say close...but no cigar.
The man has
a mission, a plan, and a color. You pink-em Quigs.
notes:
>Bruce Fleisher
had the shot of the day. Number-nine, 7-iron, 165 yards,
nothing but net. We told you last night to watch hole-nine
today.
>We did a blurb on the wristbands that the
Champions Tour Wives Association were selling at the tourney
to benefit various charities. If you couldn't find them on
the grounds today it's because they were not there. Seems
that SBC bought their entire remaining onsite inventory of
2500. They can still be bought on the web at
emarkitgolf.com
>Jay Sigel withdrew Saturday morning after experiencing a
dizzy-spell. He joins Des Smyth and Allen Doyle in
withdrawing due to illness.
>The tour invoked a
"Hall of Fame" pairing option and have Raymond Floyd and Lee
Trevino going off together on at 10:30AM on number one.
>The first 500 Sunday
spectators will receive a limited print tournament t-shirt
