Sunday, Nov 6, 2005. Atlanta, GA: If your first
name is Bart and your last name is not Simpson, odds are, very
few folks know who you are....even if you are on the PGA Tour.
Bart Bryant started changing that two years ago. Taking his
first PGA Tour win at the
Valero Texas Open in 2004 at age 40, Bryant was on the board
finally.
He went on to win
The Memorial in early June, 2005 and started getting some
attention, and gaining confidence in his game.
At the 2005
Tour Championship, held this weekend the at historic East
Lakes CC in Atlanta, he solidified a 15 month run on the PGA
Tour with his 3rd PGA Tour win and a created a name awareness
that now is becoming a lot more familiar to those that follow
the TOUR. Move over Simpson. There's a new sheriff in town and
his name is Bart Bryant.
Bryant admitted openly that he was tired of
being a "chicken" and letting the stress of the hunt affect his
game. Stating that he was "beginning to believe in his game and
also started to believe in those in his inner circle that
believed in him", he vowed to relax and let the positive vibes
flow.
It seems to have worked. Like the cliché that
Bryant used on Saturday (he said he needed to keep it in the
short grass on Sunday), he put on the proverbial clinic on
Sunday, hitting fairways, firing at pins, and putting
like....we'll...a tiger. Outside he remained cool, calm, and
collected, while those around him melted in the final stretch.
Aside from a stumble on the par-3 sixth-hole
where he pulled an 8-iron and got wet, his final round 67, which
included 6-birdies and 3-bogeys, was good enough to match the
tournament margin of victory (Bryant won by 6-strokes) attained
by Tom Lehman at the 1996 Tour Championship.
We like Tiger, the Goose, Vijay, Scott, and
Davis. But we also like Bart and how he soundly beat the
best-of-the-best in East Lake on Sunday.
A good guy won one on Sunday. Way to go Bart.
way to go...
