It Could Have Been A
Storybook EndingOctober
30, 2005 - Sonoma, CA:
The story could have read "Back-to-Back wins for
Jay Haas echoes
Mark McNulty's SBC Championship and Schwab Cup
Championship bookend wins of 2004."
and...."Thanks to Haas cruising to a win at the Schwab Cup
Championship
Dana Quigley completes fairy-tale 2005 season by winning
Schwab Cup Title/million dollar annuity and donates it all
to charity."
Just one problem.....spin doctor
Tom Watson saw the story ending another way.
Watson birdied the last hole on Sunday at
the
Schwab Cup Championship beating Haas by one-stroke,
winning $440,000 and simultaneously picked up enough Schwab
Cup points to beat Quigley by 247 points to edge him out
after Quigs had lead the race for the cup for 20 weeks in a
row.
Watson wins the Schwab Cup Championship
and Title. Game, set, match.

Final 2005
Schwab Cup Standings
Watson closed out his round on Sunday like a
man on mission. Maybe he was.
Quigley, tied for fifth in the
tournament, six shots behind Watson, commented “There’s
nothing you can do to defend the guy who’s doing all the
scoring,’’...“I mean, Watson arguably is one of the five
best players to ever play golf, and he continues to show
it.’’
As Haas stated “He’s a legend in his spare time, I guess."
